Which country loves wine most — and which city pours it cheapest
We have looked at the world through a wine glass — ranking countries by how naturally wine sits on the everyday table.
We measured two things: how much wine they drink, and whether they choose it over beer and spirits. We also priced the same six bottles, city by city.
France isn't first. New York is the cheapest city on the list. Nothing is quite where you'd expect it.
The final index includes |
Wine consumption per adult
The annual volume of wine consumed per person aged 15+, based on OIV data (2023) and adult population figures from UNDP. Using adults rather than total population keeps countries with very different age structures comparable — and means our figures run higher than the per-capita numbers OIV publishes.
Wine's share in total alcohol consumption
Using WHO Global Health Observatory data on recorded consumption (2023), we compare wine against beer and spirits – whether people prefer wine to beer and spirits
Both indicators are converted to a 10-point scale using Min–Max normalization: the lowest value for each parameter is set to 0, the highest to 10, and everything in between is scaled proportionally.
The Wine Nation Index is the average of the two, rescaled so the leading country sits at exactly 10.0. Where a country is missing either indicator, it is not scored: we list it separately rather than rank it on half a picture. The Index covers 75 countries.
We’ve designed the first wine price index built on a fixed basket: the same labels, the same vintages, in every city we ranked.
